Imagine hiking in the dead

Imagine hiking in the dead of night, in mud and horse crap, for three miles, to find the most relaxing spot in the world, and you have what I did last night. There were four of us, each not prepared for that kind of hike. We had dinky little two for three dollar flashlights with us for the journey. First of all the directions we were given were less then ideal, actually, the directions we were given didn't state anything about it being closed off because of tunnel construction. So we had to get directions from the security gaurd posted on duty to the back way, which took another hour to find. When we did find the trail we were supposed to take, we were overwhelmed by how muddy it was. Imagine mud so sticky that it would not come off your shoes until they weighted 10 pounds each. Thats what we first encountered. Finnaly when the trail became closed off to all motor vehicles, it was a bit easier. The trail was nice at first, following a small river fairly closely, but there were spots where the trial became very narrow, with 20+ foot drop offs that went into the river. And of course on these sections the trail was slopped in such a way that if you were to slip, down you go. Oh, and it was also these sections that the mud was the slickest. Very fun indeed. We hiked for at least an hour and a half, before we came across a sign that was intended for people going in the other direction that said, "There may be nude bathers at the springs". It was at this point when I had thought we went too far. Luckily we noticed another light coming from the direction we had just come from. Turned out to be a very odd mannered man with a lantern. We asked him for directions, and he gave them to us in his strange little way. He was spooky to say the least. When we finnaly got to the springs we were overwhelmed by how relaxing it was. It was a chore trying to change into suitable cloths to go into the water, there really weren't any places where you could stand comfortably and change. Nor were there places to put your cloths other then the various rocks surrounding the pool we bathed in. But again, it was well worth it. We stayed there for a few hours before we decided to leave. We started the hike back to the car around 1:30am, and what I didn't realize is that the hike to the springs was mostly downhill. I definatly was not prepared for that 3-4 mile uphill hike. By this time our flash lights were going dim as well. If they would have gone completely dead, we would have had to wait till daybreak to hike out of that canyon. But by 3am we hit the road where they had gated off from motor vehicles, and were home free. We were so relieved that we were on that road, it seemed to have just popped out of no where. Half an hour later we were back at the car, tired, dirty as hell, but very satisfied. An experience I will never forget, nor will my three other companions.
